Let’s face it- when was the last time you managed to keep a New Year’s resolution? We believe the key to sticking to a goal is picking one that is both reasonable and attainable. If you haven’t yet picked a New Year’s resolution, consider setting one that will improve your oral health!
For example, resolve to brush twice and floss once a day. Good oral hygiene only takes a few minutes a day, and can make a big difference in your oral health and overall health too! For more oral health-themed resolutions for you and your family, check out this article.
We would love to see what you come up with, share with us by commenting on this post or on our Facebook page. Whatever your New Year’s Resolution, we wish you the very best for 2011!

Cold and Flu Season is Here - Replace Your Toothbrush!
Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, the Atlanta Dental Solutions team will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!
Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:
• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!
We hope these tips help! Feel free to call us if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook.

Happy National Dental Hygiene Month!
Would you believe it's already October? For our staff, October means one thing: National Dental Hygiene Month. This month, we join the American Dental Hygienists' Association in spreading the word that good dental habits are easy to develop and even easier to maintain. Here are a few tips to help you build good oral hygiene habits this month:
* Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two to three minutes. Make sure to get the outer and inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of each tooth.
* Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth. Help children learn healthy flossing habits so when they're capable, they know how to do it properly.
* Visit us on a regular basis. Children should start seeing a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth.
* Ask us what toothpaste family members should use. Remember that not all toothpaste is appropriate for all ages.
* Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and veggies. Avoid sugary foods and eat a high fiber diet of fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots to help prevent tooth decay.
Your teeth are an important part of your body, and keeping them clean helps keep your mouth and your body healthy. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet, and visiting our convenient Atlanta office on a regular basis, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile throughout your entire life.
We encourage you to check out the ADHA's National Dental Hygiene Month website for tips on keeping your mouth clean and healthy. Lastly, has it been six months since your last visit to Atlanta Dental Solutions? If the answer is yes, we encourage you to give us a call to set up an appointment.

Cardiodontics: The Heart Mouth Connection
If you have been told you have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or periodontitis), you're not alone. An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease! Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that result in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost. Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Research is also pointing to health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth. So we at Atlanta Dental Solutions want to let you know some interesting facts and ways to treat the disease.
What is Periodontal Disease?
"Perio" means around, and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, including the gums and the bones that hold the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis – an infection of the gums. In more severe forms of the disease, all of the tissues are involved, including the bone. Bacteria that live and reproduce on the teeth and gums cause periodontal disease.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease
Symptoms may include the following:
--redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth or using dental floss
--halitosis, or bad breath
--gum recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth
--"pockets" between the teeth and gums indicating that the bone which holds the teeth in the mouth is dissolving
--loose teeth
Gum inflammation and bone destruction are largely painless. Hence, people may wrongly assume that painless bleeding after teeth cleaning is insignificant, although this may be a symptom of progressing periodontitis. If your hands bled when you washed them, you would be concerned. Yet, many people think it's normal if their gums bleed when they brush or floss.
Periodontal Disease Affects Your Health
Periodontal disease is a putrid, festering infection of the mouth. Bacteria and inflammatory particles can enter the bloodstream through ulcerated and bleeding gums and travel to the heart and other organs. In recent years, gum disease has been linked to a number of health problems. Researchers are studying possible connections between gum disease and:
--Heart disease: Gum disease may increase the risk of heart disease. Gum disease also is believed to worsen existing heart disease.
--Stroke: Gum disease may increase the risk of the type of stroke caused by blocked arteries
--Diabetes: People with diabetes and periodontal disease may be more likely to have trouble controlling their blood sugar than diabetics with healthy gums.
--Premature births: A woman who has gum diseases during pregnancy may be more likely deliver her baby too early and the infant may be more likely to be of low birth weight.
Combating Periodontal Disease
--Visit us regularly! Schedule an appointment every six months for a checkup! Regular professional cleanings and checkups make you feel good, look good, and could be a lifesaver!
--Brush and floss daily. Take your time and do it right!
--Use an anti-bacterial mouthwash. Daily use of an anti-bacterial mouthwash helps to disinfect the teeth and gums, and reduces the number of bacteria.
--Straighten your teeth. Crowded teeth are nearly impossible to keep clean. Orthodontic treatment can greatly reduce inflammation and periodontal disease. We would be happy to refer you to an orthodontic specialist in the Atlanta area, just ask!

Celebrating Dr. Una Chung’s Engagement to Dr. Sam Koo

One Sunday afternoon last May, Sam arrived at Una’s apartment dressed casually in gym shorts and a t-shirt. He carried a bouquet of flowers in one hand, and an engagement ring hidden behind a package of paper towels (which she’d asked him to pick-up) in the other. He gave her the flowers, dropped to one knee, and popped the question. Somewhere, in the midst of her laughs at his nonchalant, yet sweet proposal, he heard a “Yes!”
Dr. Sam Koo recently moved to Indianapolis to pursue a fellowship in Hand surgery after completed his Orthopaedic residency in June of this year. Dr. Chung and Dr. Koo will marry in her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio this November 20th, 2010. She will then move to Indianapolis to join Sam.
While we are sad to lose Dr. Chung’s talents at Atlanta Dental Solutions, our team couldn’t be happier for her and Dr. Koo’s new life together. We’ve already begun searching for a partner that is the perfect fit with our team and patients, and in the meantime all patient care will be seamlessly transferred to Dr. Becker. Dr. Chung’s last day with us will be November 4th, 2010.
We wish Dr. Chung and Dr. Koo much happiness and many blessings! We will be keeping up to date with Dr. Chung on the Atlanta Dental Solutions Facebook page, so please join our family and “like” our page to receive regular updates!

Omega-3 may combat mouth bacteria, boost oral health
Recently, an article was published on the dental health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids of marine and plant origin. A new study from the University of Kentucky reveals that all types of food-borne omega-3 fats (like tuna, walnuts and spinach) cut the numbers of oral disease bacteria by half or more. The study found that "the dental health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids of marine and plant origin have been found to have strong anti-bacterial activity against a range of oral pathogens and "may include anti-bacterial effects, extending the benefits beyond inflammation." The doctors involved in the study said that they planned to conduct further studies needed to prove that omega-3s acids work to benefit oral health. While this is encouraging news, we wanted to remind you that diet, hygiene, and other factors, are key to improving your oral health. Remember to consult us at Atlanta Dental Solutions if you have any questions about your diet and the effect it can have on your oral health.

Bottled Water May Be Behind Tooth Troubles
We at Atlanta Dental Solutions want you to know that as more families turn to bottled water and away from the tap, they may be missing out on one important ingredient that most brands of bottled water fail to include: fluoride! As of 2005, bottled water is second only to soft drinks as the most popular drink in the United States, beating out milk, juice, and – more significantly – tap water. Between 2001 and 2006, the amount of bottled water sold in the U.S. rose an average of 10% per year. And many dental health specialists point to bottled water’s increased popularity as the culprit behind rising rates of cavities.
Because fluoride helps strengthen teeth, it is an important component of maintaining good oral health. The benefits of fluoride were noticed in the early part of the twentieth century, when researchers found communities with low levels of tooth decay. It turned out that these towns had measurable levels (around 1 part per million) of fluoride in their drinking water.
Beginning in the 1940s, communities have fluoridated their water supplies, and dentists have seen a significant decline in cavities ever since. The American Dental Association endorses both community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride-containing products as a safe means of preventing tooth decay. Between tap water and toothpaste, most of us get sufficient amounts of fluoride.
But if your family avoids fluoridated tap water in favor of ever-more-popular bottled water, you could be missing out on the levels of fluoride necessary to make a difference in your oral health.
If bottled water is your water of choice, check the label to make sure that your brand contains fluoride. As of a 2006 decision, the FDA allows bottled water containing .6 to 1.0 milligrams per liter of fluoride to carry a label stating that fluoridated water may reduce the risk of dental cavities or tooth decay. The ADA has backed this decision.
Of course, simply drinking fluoridated water is not a magic ticket to perfect teeth. To keep your choppers in tip-top shape, it’s important to brush and floss daily and avoid sugary sweets, in addition to maintaining your fluoride intake and visiting us at Atlanta Dental Solutions regularly.

Professional Teeth Whitening in Atlanta, GA
Have you been considering teeth whitening, but feel overwhelmed by the different options available to you? We at Atlanta Dental Solutions wanted to inform you about all the options for teeth whitening.
You've seen the toothpastes and mouthwashes aimed at giving you a whiter smile. These in-home products can help reduce stains from coffee, tobacco, tea, wine and other heavily pigmented foods, but they will not dramatically change the color of the teeth.
We're sure you have also seen the over the counter whitening strip kits. While these can work well for young adults and teens, their effect for adults is often not as effective. These strips only treat the front six or eight teeth, and cannot whiten your entire smile.
So what is the answer? One of the methods we offer at Atlanta Dental Solutions is professional custom whitening trays. These are an easy way to whiten all of your teeth and allow you more control of the whitening process. Once we create your trays in the office, the whitening kit can be used in-home, and comes with custom whitening gel in various strengths depending on the sensitivity of your teeth.
These trays are comfortable to wear, and the application time is only about 15 to 30 minutes. If you have been considering a teeth whitening solution, give us a call today!

A New Study Suggests the Connection Between Oral Hygiene and Heart Health
Here at Atlanta Dental Solutions, we are always encouraging our patients to maintain a high standard of oral health, especially with the past studies linking oral health with heart health. A study was recently published to determine the relationship between daily oral hygiene and heart health. An 8 year study tracking oral hygiene habits and the likelihood of heart problems found that individuals who "rarely" or "never" brushed their teeth had a much higher chance of a heart problem - 70% higher in fact! Take a look at the article by clicking here. How strong is your daily oral hygiene routine? If you aren't brushing twice a day and flossing at least once, you should be!

A few patient reviews for Dr. Becker, Dr. Chung & Team
Atlanta Dental Solutions, serving Atlanta, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Roswell, and Marietta, GA , has been receiving some great patient reviews lately! Check out what patients at our office have to say about the doctors and team:
“I’m one happy customer! I’ve been pleased with all of my regularly scheduled appointments for hygiene. Plus, Dr. Becker gave me beautiful natural-looking front teeth. I think what I appreciate the most was how responsive everyone was when I had my horrendous abcsess tooth - YUCK. Thanks to all of you.” - Susan H.
“Over thirty years as a dental patient says a lot about the quality of this practice and the superior people involved. The staff are warm, personable, and impeccably professional people. Patty is super! ‘Friendly, professional, caring and considerate...’ couldn’t ask for a better hygienist. Dr. Chung is skilled, very personable, knowledgeable, and so thorough ... I would recommend her without hesitation. She is excellent. I have recommended this group dozens of times over the years. I don’t believe Atlanta has a finer practice of dental professionals” - Ron H.
“While going to the dentist is often an awful experience, at THIS office it’s a comfortable and enlightening experience. You’re greeted most warmly and treated like you are the first patient. The office is very modern and high tech and every patient room has a great view from the Meridian Mark office building. Getting there is easy in our city of traffic; it’s right off GA400 next to Children’s Hospital. The dentists and professional staff are gentle, warm and very knowledgeable and inspire confidence. We all need dental services so why not go to the best?” - John M.
“Everyone in the office is very friendly, but I appreciate that Grace remembers me even on the phone. I appreciate feeling like a person instead of just a number, which seems to be a problem at many medical practices.” - Kendall G.
“Dr. Chung, Thank you! You helped me get through a procedure I was dreading for years.” - Linda S.
“Your entire staff does an outstanding job of making one feel comfortable and confident of the proposed treatment plan.” - Barry R.
“I have enjoyed having Dr. Chung as my dentist. I appreciate her concern for the cost of dental work and her attempt to do all she can to do what needs to be done at the best price.” - Meredith S.
“Extremely friendly staff, beautiful office (love the free water bottles in the lobby!), and exceptional dental work. Thank you!” - Robin R.
“As usual, we started on time and finished as expected. The cleaning was well performed and relevant explanations given. All is very professional, while being personal and friendly. Very happy to be with Dr. Becker’s team for so many years!” - G. Harari
“Been with them for 25+ years and 3 offices, so would obviously highly recommend them for all your dental needs. Awesome hygienists as well :)”
“All the adjectives you look for from a medical provider - professional, courteous, comforting, friendly, efficient, organized, educational, competent - Atlanta Dental Solutions provides these every time ... even parking validation and bottled water ‘for the road’ “ - Judy M.

Flossing Tips with Atlanta Dental Solutions
While you may brush your teeth twice a day and visit us regularly, one area that patients often miss is flossing! Daily flossing is crucial to maintaining healthy gums and a healthy mouth. Brushing alone will not thoroughly clean between teeth, and an electric toothbrush and/or mouthwash are not substitutes for flossing. Any restorative work or implants you may have should also be properly flossed daily. A simple daily flossing between teeth clears away plaque before it can cause damage tooth or gum damage. There are many types of floss available, however our office recommends woven floss in lieu of glide or comfort floss. Woven floss has an easier time absorbing bacteria and disrupting the biofilm than comfort or glide varieties.
If you have any questions about the proper type of floss to use, or need a refresher on the best flossing techniques, ask us at your next appointment!

Electric Toothbrushes- Are you using yours correctly?
An electric toothbrush can be an excellent solution to ensure you are brushing effectively and for the appropriate amount of time each day. However, we at Atlanta Dental Solutions receive questions all of the time about electric toothbrushes, as well as general toothbrushing tips, so we thought we’d share a few common questions and answers below! What amount of toothpaste is appropriate (for any toothbrush)?
✴ Believe it or not, just the size equivalent of a small pea.
How much pressure should be applied with the toothbrush onto tooth surfaces?
✴ As soon as you feel the bristles against your tooth, that’s as much pressure as you should apply - this allows the bristles full range of motion. Using greater force would actually be harmful.
For what duration of time should you brush?
✴ Until it turns off. Most electronic toothbrushes are equipped with a 2-minute timer.
Does an electronic toothbrush replace flossing?
✴ The most advanced toothbrush will not substitute for flossing.
How often should the brush head be replaced?
✴ Every three months. Though the bristles may not appear worn, the bristles stiffen over time. Prolonged use of a brush head with stiffened bristles would be harmful.

Atlanta Dental Solutions Partner With Breakthru House and Action Ministries

Carrie M, one of our patients here at Atlanta Dental Solutions, is heavily involved with the Breakthru House, a long-term treatment facility for women recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Breakthru House is a member of Action Ministries Inc, a Georgia-based non-profit organization. Thanks to Carrie’s passion for helping these individuals in need, our office was able to help two women who were in a large amount of dental pain. Many thanks to both Dr. Becker who offered his office and materials for after hours use and also to Dr. Chung and Cheron Orth for providing the dental services. Pictured are the two thank you letters that these women sent to us.

The importance of oral cancer screenings at Atlanta Dental Solutions
In our continuing efforts to provide the most advanced technology and highest quality care available to our patients, Drs. Daren Becker & Una Chung provide oral cancer screening services to the Atlanta community, in addition to head and neck screens. The fact is, every hour of every day in the U.S., someone dies of oral cancer, which is the sixth-most common diagnosed form of the disease. The five-year survival rate is only 50 percent, and oral cancer is one of the few cancers whose survival rate has not improved.Early detection of pre-cancerous tissue can minimize or eliminate the potentially disfiguring effects of oral cancer and possibly save your life. When discovered early, oral cancers have a 80-90% survival rate. Ask Atlanta Dental Solutions about a thorough oral cancer screening at your next appointment! For more details and facts about this serious disease, visit the Oral Cancer Foundation’s web site, www.oralcancerfoundation.org.

Congratulations to Wesley, from Atlanta Dental Solutions

At Atlanta Dental Solutions, we value the relationships that we form with our patients, and even if we only see you for the occasional checkup, we love to learn a little about you, our patients! When Wesley and his mom (both patients at Atlanta Dental Solutions) shared with us the news that he had earned the Eagle rank in his local Boy Scout Troop, we wanted to extend our congratulations to him!
With only 2% of all Boy Scouts nationwide ever achieving the Eagle Rank, Wesley has earned a truly prestigious honor. As part of one of his service projects, Wesley led a team that planned, assembled and erected a tennis tournament scoreboard at Sandy Springs Tennis Center. As one of our patients at Atlanta Dental Solutions, we are so proud of Wesley!

The Pankey Institute and Continuing Education at Atlanta Dental Solutions
Both Drs. Una Chung and Daren Becker are members of the Pankey Institute, a nonprofit organization that promotes optimal oral health care through advanced continuing education for dentists. It was the first institute of its kind and remains among the most prestigious, attracting dentists from 42 nations to its educational programs. It is estimated that nearly 20,000 dentists and specialists have attended its courses and now serve millions of patients worldwide. Dr. Becker is also a visiting faculty member of the Pankey Institute, making him one of only 102 practitioners selected worldwide to serve on the visiting faculty!Dr. Becker most recently facilitated an interactive class designed for dentists to learn more about occlusal disease and how to restore and align damaged teeth for optimal function with esthetically beautiful, long-lasting results. Occlusal disease develops when upper and lower teeth do not fit together properly. “TMJ” problems, including pain, may occur as teeth wear against each other. Grinding teeth can make this problem much worse. Even in the absence of pain, the uneven bite is affecting tooth structure, bone, roots, gum tissue, and jaw joints. Excessive wear, cracks, fractures, tooth movement, tooth sensitivity, cavities, and gum disease can all be part of the occlusal disease process. Call Atlanta Dental Solutions at 404-496-5535 to learn more about occlusal disease and how it can be treated, or learn more about Dr. Becker and Dr Chung’s continuing dental education on our web site!

Gum Disease Can Sneak Up On You

It’s easy to tell when you have a cavity; but unfortunately, gum disease can exist in your mouth without you even knowing. In fact, you can have the beginning stages of gum disease without noticing any pain or discomfort. Since gum disease can be undetectable, it’s important to watch for warning signs in order to prevent the disease from worsening!
Signs to watch for:
• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position
• Any change in the way partial dentures fit
If you or someone in your family is showing these signs, schedule an appointment right away by calling 404-496-5535. We can diagnose the problem and begin treatment to save your teeth and give you back a healthy mouth!

iTero System: Fast and Accurate Digital Impressions at Atlanta Dental Solutions
We are excited to be using iTero, a new, completely digital system for taking tooth impressions for restorative dental work. If you have ever had any restorative work done in the past, you may remember the conventional technique, which involves impression paste and trays. The old process takes longer, and is less precise than our new iTero system. Digital impressions with our iTero system are taken using laser and optical scanning to capture a digital copy of the shape and contours of your teeth. With this information, we can then send the data to a laboratory for processing, and to fabricate a custom restoration. We now use the iTero system for all our fixed restorations, including crowns, bridges, implants, veneers, inlays and onlays.
Ask us about this exciting new technology at your next appointment, or give us a call at 404-496-5535.

Back in November, the New York Times published an article discussing the long term benefits of dental implants over bridges for tooth replacement. Check it out by clicking here.Keep in mind that although implants can be a very effective solution to tooth loss, the process is a more involved one, and therefore need to be completed in stages.
We at Atlanta Dental Solutions are able to provide dental implants as part of a smile makeover, and the entire process can take anywhere from 3-6 months. While implants are a great long term solution for many patients, those with serious gum or jawbone deficiencies, osteoporosis, or uncontrolled diabetes may not be able to support a long-term implant.
Call us today at 404-496-5535 and schedule a cosmetic dentistry consultation with us to discuss your implant options. You can also visit our web site to see before and after photos of our smile makeovers and rate your own smile!

Your Friend – Fluoride
There are so many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment. You brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly. But did you know there is another, often overlooked way to keep your teeth clean and healthy? Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties, topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement. We also use in-office fluoride treatments to help protect the oral health of adults and children alike. Fluoride used in-office is often times a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask us how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. We may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for at-home treatment.
When choosing your own fluoride product be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

Regular Checkups are Important!

Are you brushing your teeth twice a day? If yes, that’s great; but, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit us at Atlanta Dental Solutions every six months in addition to brushing and flossing each day. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health.
Dr. Becker & Dr. Chung can:
• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth
During an oral exam we will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not come to see us in the last six months, it’s time for you to schedule an appointment!
