At Atlanta Dental Solutions we know the rumors going around—mostly among young people—that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! We really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry!

This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!

Why do I need Dental X-rays?

Some dental problems are clearly noticeable, like a chipped tooth or a painful cavity. Other issues are not so easy to see, and in some cases are impossible to diagnose with the naked eye. Fortunately, we have x-ray technology to help us find these problems before they become catastrophic. At Atlanta Dental Solutions, we are very pleased to offer our patients Digital Radiography, which exposes you to the least amount of radiation possible. In fact, our radiographs expose you to less radiation than the normal amount you receive from daily sun exposure or household appliances like your television.

Digital Radiography identifies:

• Bone loss or infection of the bone
• Cracks in teeth
• Infections at the roots of teeth
• Decay between teeth, below the gum line, or near older restorations
• Impacted teeth
• Oddly shaped roots that might need special attention in the case of a root canal procedure
• Gum Disease/Periodontal Disease
• Abscesses or cysts
• Developmental abnormalities
• Tumors

The earlier we can detect dental problems, the better able we are to solve them quickly and before they become more serious. Our ultimate goal is to prevent tooth loss and keep your mouth disease-free! Regular radiographs provide us with a historical record of your mouth, so we can observe change over time. Dr. Daren Becker and our hygienists are constantly referring back to your x-rays even when they are not taken that day. They continue to be useful to us in monitoring your mouth!

Our current radiograph protocol is:

• Bitewing X-rays (set of 8) – once per year
• Panorex or Full Set of Intraoral X-rays – once per 3-5 years depending on your dental history

Understanding Cavities with Dr. Becker

One word nobody wants to hear during a visit with Dr. Daren Becker at Atlanta Dental Solutions is, Cavity! That’s right, the dreaded cavity; but what exactly is a cavity and how do you get one? A cavity is a hole that develops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

So, what causes a cavity? A cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed.

Yes, cavities can be repaired by your dentist, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities:

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily
• Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)
• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach
• Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat/drink
• Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!

For the past 61 Februaries, the American Dental Association, or ADA, has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. National Children's Dental Health Month began as a one-day event in 1941 in a Cleveland clinic. In 1981, however, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Each February, Dr. Daren Becker and thousands of dental professionals focus on the preventive oral care of America's children. Dr. Becker and our staff want you to remember developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Smoking, Oral Health's Enemy

Everybody knows that smoking causes lung cancer, but Dr. Daren Becker also wants to make sure that you know that smokers and tobacco users are susceptible to a variety of oral health problems at a faster rate than non-smokers.

It’s true! Smoking is responsible for almost 75 percent of gum disease in adults; and, similar to smokers, adults who smoke pipes and cigars, as well as those using smokeless tobacco, are just as susceptible to gum disease and other tobacco related health problems.

As soon as you use tobacco products, you become more likely to experience any of these oral health problems:

• Oral cancer
• Gum disease
• Tooth loss
• Loss of bone in the jaw
• Gum recession
• Delayed/impaired healing process after oral surgery or any other treatment
• Decreased success rate of dental implant (tooth replacement) procedures
• Mouth sores
• Loss of your sense of taste and smell

Ask Dr. Becker: Which toothbrush should my child use?

Dr. Becker will tell you that brushing your teeth is one of the easiest methods of cavity prevention. But which type of toothbrush should your child use? When choosing a toothbrush, look for round-ended (polished) bristles that clean while being gentle on the gums. Choose one that is specifically designed for children's smaller mouths and hands. Also, look for large handles that can help children control the toothbrush. Lastly, throw out a toothbrush after three months or sooner if the bristles are fraying. Frayed bristles can harm your gums, and are not as effective in cleaning teeth.

As far as which toothpaste is best? It doesn't matter as long as it has fluoride in it. However, for small children who tend to swallow toothpaste, do not use fluoridated toothpaste. Make sure to touch each tooth and every side of that tooth. Also, you do need to gently brush on your gums.

How to Freshen Bad Breath

Dr. Daren Becker, your Atlanta Georgia dentist, recognizes that many of our patients are concerned about bad breath, or halitosis. While some cases of bad breath are persistent (chronic bad breath), generally bad breath is transient, and can be prevented.

Cold and Flu Season is Here - Replace Your Toothbrush!

Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, the Atlanta Dental Solutions team will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs are known to linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

Happy National Dental Hygiene Month!

Would you believe it's already October? For our staff, October means one thing: National Dental Hygiene Month. This month, we join the American Dental Hygienists' Association in spreading the word that good dental habits are easy to develop and even easier to maintain.

Here are a few tips to help you build good oral hygiene habits this month:

* Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two to three minutes. Make sure to get the outer and inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of each tooth.

* Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth. Help children learn healthy flossing habits so when they're capable, they know how to do it properly.

* Visit us on a regular basis. Children should start seeing a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth.

* Ask us what toothpaste family members should use. Remember that not all toothpaste is appropriate for all ages.

* Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and veggies. Avoid sugary foods and eat a high fiber diet of fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots to help prevent tooth decay.

Your teeth are an important part of your body, and keeping them clean helps keep your mouth and your body healthy. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet, and visiting our convenient Atlanta office on a regular basis, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile throughout your entire life.

Cardiodontics: The Heart Mouth Connection

If you have been told you have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or periodontitis), you're not alone. An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease! Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that result in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.

Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Research is also pointing to health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth. So we at Atlanta Dental Solutions want to let you know some interesting facts and ways to treat the disease.

What is Periodontal Disease?

"Perio" means around, and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, including the gums and the bones that hold the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis – an infection of the gums. In more severe forms of the disease, all of the tissues are involved, including the bone. Bacteria that live and reproduce on the teeth and gums cause periodontal disease.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Symptoms may include the following:
--redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth or using dental floss
--halitosis, or bad breath
--gum recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth
--"pockets" between the teeth and gums indicating that the bone which holds the teeth in the mouth is dissolving
--loose teeth

Gum inflammation and bone destruction are largely painless. Hence, people may wrongly assume that painless bleeding after teeth cleaning is insignificant, although this may be a symptom of progressing periodontitis. If your hands bled when you washed them, you would be concerned. Yet, many people think it's normal if their gums bleed when they brush or floss.

Periodontal Disease Affects Your Health

Periodontal disease is a putrid, festering infection of the mouth. Bacteria and inflammatory particles can enter the bloodstream through ulcerated and bleeding gums and travel to the heart and other organs. In recent years, gum disease has been linked to a number of health problems. Researchers are studying possible connections between gum disease and:

--Heart disease: Gum disease may increase the risk of heart disease. Gum disease also is believed to worsen existing heart disease.
--Stroke: Gum disease may increase the risk of the type of stroke caused by blocked arteries
--Diabetes: People with diabetes and periodontal disease may be more likely to have trouble controlling their blood sugar than diabetics with healthy gums.
--Premature births: A woman who has gum diseases during pregnancy may be more likely deliver her baby too early and the infant may be more likely to be of low birth weight.

Combating Periodontal Disease

--Visit us regularly! Schedule an appointment every six months for a checkup! Regular professional cleanings and checkups make you feel good, look good, and could be a lifesaver!
--Brush and floss daily. Take your time and do it right!
--Use an anti-bacterial mouthwash. Daily use of an anti-bacterial mouthwash helps to disinfect the teeth and gums, and reduces the number of bacteria.
--Straighten your teeth. Crowded teeth are nearly impossible to keep clean. Orthodontic treatment can greatly reduce inflammation and periodontal disease. We would be happy to refer you to an orthodontic specialist in the Atlanta area, just ask!

Celebrating Dr. Una Chung’s Engagement to Dr. Sam Koo

One Sunday afternoon last May, Sam arrived at Una’s apartment dressed casually in gym shorts and a t-shirt. He carried a bouquet of flowers in one hand, and an engagement ring hidden behind a package of paper towels (which she’d asked him to pick-up) in the other. He gave her the flowers, dropped to one knee, and popped the question. Somewhere, in the midst of her laughs at his nonchalant, yet sweet proposal, he heard a “Yes!”

Dr. Sam Koo recently moved to Indianapolis to pursue a fellowship in Hand surgery after completed his Orthopaedic residency in June of this year. Dr. Chung and Dr. Koo will marry in her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio this November 20th, 2010. She will then move to Indianapolis to join Sam.

While we are sad to lose Dr. Chung’s talents at Atlanta Dental Solutions, our team couldn’t be happier for her and Dr. Koo’s new life together. We’ve already begun searching for a partner that is the perfect fit with our team and patients, and in the meantime all patient care will be seamlessly transferred to Dr. Becker. Dr. Chung’s last day with us will be November 4th, 2010.

Omega-3 may combat mouth bacteria, boost oral health

Recently, an article was published on the dental health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids of marine and plant origin. A new study from the University of Kentucky reveals that all types of food-borne omega-3 fats (like tuna, walnuts and spinach) cut the numbers of oral disease bacteria by half or more.

The study found that "the dental health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids of marine and plant origin have been found to have strong anti-bacterial activity against a range of oral pathogens and "may include anti-bacterial effects, extending the benefits beyond inflammation." The doctors involved in the study said that they planned to conduct further studies needed to prove that omega-3s acids work to benefit oral health. While this is encouraging news, we wanted to remind you that diet, hygiene, and other factors, are key to improving your oral health. Bottled Water May Be Behind Tooth Troubles

We at Atlanta Dental Solutions want you to know that as more families turn to bottled water and away from the tap, they may be missing out on one important ingredient that most brands of bottled water fail to include: fluoride!

As of 2005, bottled water is second only to soft drinks as the most popular drink in the United States, beating out milk, juice, and – more significantly – tap water. Between 2001 and 2006, the amount of bottled water sold in the U.S. rose an average of 10% per year. And many dental health specialists point to bottled water’s increased popularity as the culprit behind rising rates of cavities.

Because fluoride helps strengthen teeth, it is an important component of maintaining good oral health. The benefits of fluoride were noticed in the early part of the twentieth century, when researchers found communities with low levels of tooth decay. It turned out that these towns had measurable levels (around 1 part per million) of fluoride in their drinking water.

Beginning in the 1940s, communities have fluoridated their water supplies, and dentists have seen a significant decline in cavities ever since. The American Dental Association endorses both community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride-containing products as a safe means of preventing tooth decay. Between tap water and toothpaste, most of us get sufficient amounts of fluoride.

But if your family avoids fluoridated tap water in favor of ever-more-popular bottled water, you could be missing out on the levels of fluoride necessary to make a difference in your oral health.

If bottled water is your water of choice, check the label to make sure that your brand contains fluoride. As of a 2006 decision, the FDA allows bottled water containing .6 to 1.0 milligrams per liter of fluoride to carry a label stating that fluoridated water may reduce the risk of dental cavities or tooth decay. The ADA has backed this decision.

Of course, simply drinking fluoridated water is not a magic ticket to perfect teeth. To keep your choppers in tip-top shape, it’s important to brush and floss daily and avoid sugary sweets, in addition to maintaining your fluoride intake and visiting us at Atlanta Dental Solutions regularly.

Professional Teeth Whitening in Atlanta, GA

A New Study Suggests the Connection Between Oral Hygiene and Heart Health

Here at Atlanta Dental Solutions, we are always encouraging our patients to maintain a high standard of oral health, especially with the past studies linking oral health with heart health. A study was recently published to determine the relationship between daily oral hygiene and heart health. An 8 year study tracking oral hygiene habits and the likelihood of heart problems found that individuals who "rarely" or "never" brushed their teeth had a much higher chance of a heart problem - 70% higher in fact! We couldn’t wait for Katherine to join us, both for the wealth of experience she has brought to our team, and the warmth and kindness she has for our patients. Flossing Tips with Atlanta Dental Solutions

While you may brush your teeth twice a day and visit us regularly, one area that patients often miss is flossing! Daily flossing is crucial to maintaining healthy gums and a healthy mouth. Brushing alone will not thoroughly clean between teeth, and an electric toothbrush and/or mouthwash are not substitutes for flossing. Any restorative work or implants you may have should also be properly flossed daily.

A simple daily flossing between teeth clears away plaque before it can cause damage tooth or gum damage. There are many types of floss available, however our office recommends woven floss in lieu of glide or comfort floss. Woven floss has an easier time absorbing bacteria and disrupting the biofilm than comfort or glide varieties.

Electric Toothbrushes- Are you using yours correctly?

An electric toothbrush can be an excellent solution to ensure you are brushing effectively and for the appropriate amount of time each day. However, we at Atlanta Dental Solutions receive questions all of the time about electric toothbrushes, as well as general toothbrushing tips, so we thought we’d share a few common questions and answers below!

What amount of toothpaste is appropriate (for any toothbrush)?
✴ Believe it or not, just the size equivalent of a small pea.

How much pressure should be applied with the toothbrush onto tooth surfaces?
✴ As soon as you feel the bristles against your tooth, that’s as much pressure as you should apply - this allows the bristles full range of motion. Using greater force would actually be harmful.

For what duration of time should you brush?
✴ Until it turns off. Most electronic toothbrushes are equipped with a 2-minute timer.

Does an electronic toothbrush replace flossing?
✴ The most advanced toothbrush will not substitute for flossing.

How often should the brush head be replaced?
✴ Every three months. Though the bristles may not appear worn, the bristles stiffen over time. Prolonged use of a brush head with stiffened bristles would be harmful.

Carrie M, one of our patients here at Atlanta Dental Solutions, is heavily involved with the Breakthru House, a long-term treatment facility for women recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Breakthru House is a member of Action Ministries Inc, a Georgia-based non-profit organization. Thanks to Carrie’s passion for helping these individuals in need, our office was able to help two women who were in a large amount of dental pain. Many thanks to both Dr. Becker who offered his office and materials for after hours use and also to Dr. Chung and Cheron Orth for providing the dental services. Atlanta Community Involvement Spotlight: Youth Dental Education at the Temple Sinai Preschool

At Atlanta Dental Solutions, part of our goal is to improve the Atlanta community’s access to dental care. Dr. Chung’s involvement with Dentistry from the Heart, which we outlined last week, is a great example of how we work to assist these in-need individuals.

However, another key piece of our community involvement is through youth dental education. Every year, Dr. Becker and Cheron Orth, our assistant, visit the local Temple Sinai preschool to educate students on proper brushing and flossing techniques, and the overall importance of taking care of teeth. Building strong oral hygiene habits at an early age are critical to prevention of future dental problems, and balancing this with a healthy diet will contribute to a lifetime of healthy smiles!

Dr. Chung, Cheron and Dana are involved with “Dentistry From the Heart”, an annual program across 48 states which provides free dental care to individuals in need. Dr. Chung and Cheron participated in the event last year on November 21st, and Dana will be joining them this year on June 26th for the local event this year at Jones Bridge Dental Care in Alpharetta. Last year’s event provided nearly $46,000 worth of free dentistry to 144 patients. We were proud to volunteer with this wonderful program, and look forward to the next event in June!

Both Drs. Una Chung and Daren Becker are members of the Pankey Institute, a nonprofit organization that promotes optimal oral health care through advanced continuing education for dentists. iTero System: Fast and Accurate Digital Impressions at Atlanta Dental Solutions

We are excited to be using iTero, a new, completely digital system for taking tooth impressions for restorative dental work. If you have ever had any restorative work done in the past, you may remember the conventional technique, which involves impression paste and trays. The old process takes longer, and is less precise than our new iTero system.

Digital impressions with our iTero system are taken using laser and optical scanning to capture a digital copy of the shape and contours of your teeth. With this information, we can then send the data to a laboratory for processing, and to fabricate a custom restoration. We now use the iTero system for all our fixed restorations, including crowns, bridges, implants, veneers, inlays and onlays.

Your Friend – Fluoride

There are so many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment. You brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly. But did you know there is another, often overlooked way to keep your teeth clean and healthy? Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties, topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement. We also use in-office fluoride treatments to help protect the oral health of adults and children alike.

Fluoride used in-office is often times a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask us how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. We may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for at-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

Get to Know Our Dentists

Dr. Daren Becker is committed to staying at the forefront of dentistry by attending continuing education courses each year and by participating in several local study clubs. In 2009, the Pierre Fauchard Academy invited Dr. Becker to join the International Honorary Dental Service Organization - a distinction extended to fewer than 4% of dental practitioners worldwide. Dr. Becker also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation at the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry.

When Dr. Becker is away from the office, he enjoys the company of family and friends, traveling, fly-fishing, golfing and the opportunity to enjoy all that the local cultures and geography have to offer. Dr. Becker lives in Dunwoody with his wife, Amanda, and daughters, Alicia & Addison.

Smile fact: Daren is a left handed, flat-footed, chocoholic who knows every word to every song he’s ever heard ... but can’t sing in tune.

Dr. Chung is dedicated to providing advanced dentistry at the highest level with particular attention to the area of comprehensive care. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree and the University of Florida where she completed her residency in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. During the program, Dr. Chung focused on implant placement and restoration, periodontal surgery, endodontic therapy, and prosthodontics. To stay current with advancements in dentistry, she is a frequent student at the Dawson Center for the Advancement of Dentistry and The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education.

Dr. Chung is originally from West Chester, Ohio, and completed her Bachelor of Music ad hoc Music Cognition as a C.V. Starr Scholar at the Northwestern University School of Music in Evanston, Illinois. She is trained in the viola and frequents the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra often. When she’s not in the office, you’ll likely find her at the park with her puppy (Carter), on the golf course, or by the water.

Smile fact: Una tends to educate others even when outside the office. Sometimes she’ll provide a rousing dinner conversation with friends centered on the ins and outs of flossing effectively. She’s even been known to hand out soft toothbrushes at small groups!
